MySpace Attacked for Keeping Kids Off the Streets

As people trudge back to work, after the summer lull, there seems to be a dark cloud hanging over many people’s heads. First they decide that their lives were better twenty years ago, and now a national newspaper has launched a campaign to save their children from the perceived evils of modern life.

The Daily Telegraph’s ‘Hold onto Childhood’ campaign is striving to save our junior citizens from the ’sinister cocktail’ of sitting on their computer, munching crisps, whilst worrying about their next exam.

Many parents might have fond memories of climbing trees and making mud pies, but the kids of today seem far too tech savvy for such simple pleasures. Even just hanging around with the kids in your neighbourhood seems a dated concept. More and more are fleeing the streets and spending their time making friends online.

The latest research figures show that the Internet is evolving and integrating into young people’s lives at an astronomical rate. Social networking sites, such as MySpace, Bebo and YouTube, have all seen their usage grow by over 300% in the last year:

“Many of the sites experiencing the fastest growth today are the ones that understand their audience’s need for expression, and have made it easy for them to share pictures, upload music and video, and provide their own commentary, thus stimulating others to do the same. It is the classic network effect at work.”

Few could have predicted that social networking sites would start occupying so much of people’s time so quickly. The Internet is being used by increasing numbers as a platform for developing relationships based on interest rather than geography.

Young people are far more web savvy than their parents and have grown up with the Internet as their primary information resource. There can be little doubt that, as they grow into the business world, they will find new and effective ways of using it to improve how they manage their professional lives.

A new study of business professionals found (in the US at least):

“more than 53 percent of respondents say the content they read in blogs has an impact on their work-related purchasing decisions. Some 80 percent of respondents say they read blogs, with 51 saying they read them at least once a week.”

I haven’t seen the previous year’s figures but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a marked rise in the usage of blogs (if not quite the 300% MySpace and co have experienced). Social networking sites are becoming the dominate domains on the Internet and appear to be developing the most influence.

Blogs have yet to penetrate the mass market and be utilised in huge numbers by regular consumers. This is largely, I believe, due to the inaccessibility of RSS to the non web savvy.

But once RSS penetrates the mass market, and you consider the growth of MySpace and usage of blogs by business professionals, isn’t it inevitable that regular consumers will follow in using blogs to assist their buying decisions?

It might not be long before kids are forced back into loitering around the streets because their parents are hogging the computer researching what HDTV to buy, or to track down that rare Elvis record they haven’t been able to find in record shops anywhere.

Stairlifts – Alternative to Climbing Stairs

The advent of modern stairlift technology has improved considerably and numerous user friendly features have been added. People with joint pains, arthritis, physical disability and handicaps or elderly people select to get stairlifts installed to enjoy living independently in their own homes without extra support. Better features and modern technology has made their lives easier.

Information about the individual models and features available in stairlifts is easily available online, for better decisions on purchasing. From wheelchair accessibility, home use, speed control to the assembly and installation, there has been an improvement in the services offered by manufactures after user feedback and better technologies.

If you are looking to have a stairlift installed, but worried about the high speed while ascending or descending, it is best to choose a stairlift with a soft start and stop feature. It starts slowly and then before stopping, it looses speed. Additionally, most of the disable lifts are available with a host of safety functions that include an emergency button, safety belt or harness, depending upon your requirement, safety edges for stability in case of an obstruction on the staircase.

Standard stairlifts or straight stairlifts are faster and easier to install instead of curved stairlifts as there is no need to customize as per individual requirement. However, speed on customized curved stairlifts varies as the carriage and rails have to slow down on turns. But if you are looking for outdoor stairlifts, there are plenty available that are weatherproof for harsh weather conditions. If you are still not sure what would suit your or your family member’s requirement, it is best to call and schedule an appointment with a company representative or consult an installation technician about the best possible choice.

With stairlifts, you will never need to worry about the pain and discomfort of climbing stairs or having access to only one floor. Installation of stairlift is an investment to be able to enjoy living in your home independently.

Lung Power and Climbing

Being able to breathe properly is critical for mountain climbers, especially once they get to the higher altitudes. As most people know, the atmosphere starts to thin noticeably, and it is hard to get the oxygen you need, even if you breathe very deeply.

However, once the weather on the mountain starts to become very cold, it is imperative to keep an eye on everyone’s breathing, even if they are experienced climbers well-versed in proper techniques. Very cold weather tends to make breathing much more difficult, not to mention raise your risk for getting a stroke. Fires, very warm clothing and breath-aiding devices are quite necessary. Such are the effects of cold on your respiration.

Then again, it is possible for the reverse to happen: that is, for breathing to affect body temperature. Still, such skills can be quite challenging to learn. For instance, there is the practice known as Tumo. Tumo can be thought of as a kind of “power breathing.” It is a very special technique developed by Tibetan monks. Not only does it help them stay warm in winter, but it also helps them to get through some of their more arduous meditation rituals, which can involve standing or sitting in icy-cold water for an entire night. Make no mistake, this is not an easy technique to learn, even for the monks themselves. It must be practiced for several hours a day, for many years. Many initiates begin learning it as young boy novices, and only master it some time during adulthood. Traveling monks may give introductory classes during lectures and other types of visits, but such lessons are only a tiny taste of what the real technique is like.

Regulated breathing can be quite useful in the case of climbing accidents. For example, you might get caught in a cave-in or other such occurrence, and become trapped in a small, confined space. You might have brought some oxygen tanks with you, but these will eventually run out, and either way, you still have to deal with the carbon dioxide building up in that small space from your exhalations. Being able to control your breathing increases the likelihood that you will be still breathing when it comes. Controlling breath can also help you stay calm and focused. Breathe easy, and you can conserve air by not hyperventilating.

If you improve breathing patterns, this can also increase endurance when you are climbing up the lower altitudes. The atmosphere might still be what you are used to at low-lying areas, but the exertion of climbing means that you will still need to breathe deeply in order to feed your muscles.

In conclusion, be sure to include various types of breathing exercises as you prepare for mountain climbing. Try to learn some tricks for increasing endurance, conserving air in tight places, staying calm and even keeping warm. Even if you bring oxygen tanks, it is good to train your system to be its own oxygen tank, up to a point.

Rock Climbing Equipment

Many different kinds of equipment are used to help people climb. Rock climbers use their gear to stabilize themselves on the side of a sheer rock face, secure themselves for safety in the event that they slip and fall, and protect their body from impact if they come into hard contact with the rock.

As the number one concern when rock climbing is the possibility of a fall, the most important pieces of gear for rock climbers are their harnesses and rope systems. Modern climbing ropes are designed with a core of long twisted fibers surrounded by woven fibers. The ropes have some flexibility and elasticity, which means they are far less likely to snap under sudden tension or to cause whiplash by bringing a falling user to an instantaneous stop ‘ instead there will be a little bounce in the line to create a smoother end to the fall. Static rope is another kind of rope which does not have the same amount of give and is used for the critical connections of the belaying / anchoring system that a climber uses to stay connected to the rock face. Nylon webbing is used in some cases as well but is a completely different kind of specialized material with an amazingly high tensile strength.

The rope system that a rock climber uses is attached to a belay device ‘ a piece of gear that allows the rope to be gradually released but seizes onto the rope and prevents it from continuing to run in case of a fall. The belay device will be attached to the rock face with some kind of support or cam system to provide a point of anchor. A belay device will have an active camming device or a passive camming device. With an active camming device a user must lock off the rope with his / her brake hand and a carabiner (a kind of metal loop with a spring loaded gate, usually made from aluminum). Of course, when such a system is being used, two people are climbing together for increased safety, and the current second (the lower climber who is staying put while the other continues on) will be in charge of keeping the belaying system operational in case of a fall.

Finally, the climber is attached to the rope and the belay device using a harness. The most important thing in choosing a harness (besides making sure that it is entirely secure) is making sure that it has a good fit, as it will likely have to support much of your weight for a good amount of time. Also keep in mind that while there are different kinds of harnesses, such as chest harness and full body harnesses in addition to the traditional sit harnesses, not all of them are equally safe. Chest harnesses have been found in some cases to increase the risk of damage to the neck at the end of a drop. In addition to these pieces of equipment, rock climbers wear protective helmets and carry bags of chalk on their belt to give them a better grip. All of these kinds of gear are important for safe rock climbing!
